General Tooth Extraction
When you have a tooth that has been damaged by decay or broken, it can sometimes be fixed with a filling, root canal, or a crown. Sometimes there is too much damage for one of these procedures, and you must have your tooth removed. Some of the common reasons for tooth extraction are listed below.
• Infections. When tooth decay or damage enters the center of the tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels, it can become incurable through root canal therapy or antibiotics. If your immune system has been compromised (because of chemotherapy, organ transplants, or other reasons), you may have an increased risk for dental infections.
• Crowding. When baby teeth do not fall out in time for adult teeth to grow in, they may need to be extracted. Extra teeth preventing your normal teeth from growing properly can also cause crowding and other oral health problems. Sometimes an extraction is necessary to prepare the mouth for orthodontia.
• Tooth Loosening. An infection of the tissues and bone surrounding the teeth, also known as periodontal disease, may loosen adult teeth. Extractions can sometimes prevent the spread of periodontal disease and tooth loosening.
Before scheduling your procedure, your doctor will perform a thorough oral exam and take an X-ray of the area in which the tooth must be removed. Your doctor will formulate a plan for the extraction taking into consideration your age, the presence of gum disease, and your tooth’s relationship with other areas of your mouth such as your sinuses, nerves, and other teeth. Most tooth extractions can be completed during a single surgical visit.
